Unless you’ve been living on a rock your whole life(celestial humor), you have probably noticed the moon(regular humor). This Sunday, the very same moon will be involved in a total lunar eclipse. This means that from Earth’s point of view, the moon will be exactly opposite the sun. This means that the Earth will be blocking the light from the sun on its way to the moon, making every side of the moon the dark side of the moon. Read on to find out when and how to watch the Lunar Eclipse on Sunday, September 27th, 2015 in Scottsdale AZ.

What

This eclipse is special because it falls on the same night as a full moon. This makes the moon appear huge in the sky and makes it not only easier, but more entertaining to see in lunar eclipse form. Without the light from the sun, the moon actually appears red in the sky. This phenomenon has landed the full-moon eclipse with the nickname “blood moon”. Don’t worry though, you won’t get nauseous because the moon is actually made of cheese, not blood.

When

For residents in Scottsdale, the Lunar Eclipse will begin just after 5 PM. It will take a couple hours to get there, but around 7:45 PM you can expect to see it in all of its total eclipse glory. As we twirl around the sun, the moon will begin to light up again until approximately 10:20 when the world will be back to normal.

How

Unlike a solar eclipse, a lunar eclipse is safe to view without eye protection or fancy homemade redirection scopes. Just tilt your head up about forty degrees, then rotate 360 degrees in a circle. If you don’t see it, repeat. If you have a telescope or even binoculars, we highly recommend using them because it will greatly enhance the experience.

The next total lunar eclipse won’t occur until 2017, so make sure you get outside to enjoy it!
