With the introduction of the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6, it is clear that Mercedes-Benz has had it up to here with Tesla. For two long, Tesla has had a tight grip on the luxury electric market, holding it just above the head of Mercedes-Benz. This is a category that Mercedes-Benz has had its sights on since the very beginning of the automobile. Now, Tesla runs free in the American market, even flaunting many features that Mercedes-Benz has been known for in its more than 100 years of service to the industry. Take, for example, the gullwing doors.

Mercedes-Benz Gullwing

The gullwing first made its debut into the automotive world with the 1952 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL. It is one of the most famous passenger vehicles in history and shaped the look for cars that came after such as the DMC DeLorean, Tesla Model X, and the Mercedes-Benz AMG SLS GT.

Tesla Gullwing

If you are familiar with the Tesla brand, you know that the gullwing doors, or Falcon Wing Doors as Tesla calls them, are a little more advanced than the standard gullwing doors you will find on a Mercedes-Benz. This is all slated to change with the gullwing doors on the Vision Mercedes-Maybach V6.

Benefits of Gullwing Doors

The gullwing door started with one purpose. It makes a car look like a space ship. Since then, new benefits have come to light, such as the ability to open even when wedged in a tight parking spot. They also make it next to impossible to slam your fingers in the door, but they are hard to reach for children, taking away from the safety a little bit. Still, it seems that this may once again be the future of automotive luxury. What do you think? Is it cool or should companies give it up already?
