Mercedes-Benz Whensday: The Legend Of The Unimog

What Is A Mercedes-Benz Unimog?

Unless you are a die-hard Mercedes-Benz fan, you may be asking yourself, “What is a Mercedes-Benz Unimog?”. Because it isn’t sold in the United States, it is a relatively foreign term. The Mercedes-Benz Unimog is an all-terrain vehicle that began its life as a tractor, but quickly became known for its versatility and usability in numerous applications such as fire-fighting, mountain exploration, and paving roads, among many others.

What Is The Purpose Of A Mercedes-Benz Unimog?

When the Mercedes-Benz Unimog was introduced in 1945 by the head of the aircraft engine division at Mercedes-AMG, it was designed to be a tractor capable of plowing fields, hauling logs, and pulling heavy equipment. Although it performed well, Mercedes-Benz took one look at it and said, “We don’t want it”. After hearing this, its inventor, Albert Friedrich, left the company to work on the Unimog full time. In 1948, production began, but was unable to keep up with the high demand. This led to the Unimog being sold to Mercedes-Benz in 1950. Not a bad gig for Mr. Friedrich, wouldn’t you say?

Unimog Specifications

When the Unimog first hit the showroom floor in 1948, it had 25 horsepower and was capable of traveling at speeds up to 31 miles per hour. This made it more powerful and faster than any tractor of its time. Now, the Unimog can be found being used in thousands of different applications and hundreds upon hundreds of horsepower.

Where Can You Buy Mercedes-Benz Unimog?

If you live in the United States with us, unfortunately you can’t buy a Unimog brand new from Mercedes-Benz, but there are special organizations that help owners buy and sell Unimogs in the United States. The ones you will find here are mostly collectors items, but they will still plow a field no problem. If you have any questions about the history of the Mercedes-Benz Unimog, leave a comment below!
