How Efficient is the Intelligent Aerodynamic Automobile from Mercedes-Benz?

Mercedes-Benz Concept IAA Drag Coefficient

The hype of the Mercedes-Benz concept car at the Frankfurt Auto Show is overtaking the internet and it is easy to understand once you know exactly how much it improves on efficiency. By now we know that the IAA transforms on the move to accommodate a lower drag coefficient at higher speeds. It is a modern marvel, but what exactly is the drag coefficient of the Mercedes-Benz Concept IAA?

Drag coefficient is a measurement of how easily and efficiently something can move through the surrounding air. It takes into account air density, drag area, and speed. To lower the drag coefficient of the vehicle, these three factors need to be manipulated. We can’t control air density, so that is out of the picture. What we can control is the drag area, and, thanks to Mercedes-Benz, we can now adjust the drag area on the go to maximize efficiency at different speeds.

Model Drag Coefficient
C-Class Sedan 0.24
S-Class (Present) 0.24
C-Class Coupe 0.26
S-Class (2000-2005) 0.27
E-Class (1985-1996) 0.28
C-Class Coupe (2001) 0.29
SL-Class (Top Up) 0.29
CLA-Class 0.30
SL-Class (Top Down) 0.34
G-Class 0.54

The drag coefficient of the IAA, when in Aerodynamic Mode, is 0.19. To put this into perspective, a Mercedes-Benz SL-Class has a drag coefficient of about 0.34 and a G-Class has a measurement of 0.54. This isn’t the first time Mercedes-Benz created a concept car like this. In fact, in 2005, the Bionic Concept was unveiled that had the same drag coefficient. It is also not the lowest efficient in history. Many concept cars and race cars practice the art of lowering drag coefficients for the sole purpose of trying to create the most aerodynamic vehicle on four wheels.

GLC Coupe Sneak Peak
It will be exciting to see where Mercedes-Benz goes with the Mercedes-Benz Concept IAA drag coefficient. Although it is not the lowest measurement in history, it certainly is the best looking prototype. It is so pleasing to look at, we are willing to bet that if you are reading this right now, you would probably use one as your daily driver. Don’t forget to leave a comment if you would like to know more about the topic or the IAA itself!
