The 2021 Mercedes-Benz SUV lineup offers a luxury option for nearly every need, distinguished primarily by size, performance, and features. The four main models—GLA, GLB, GLE, and GLS—form a clear hierarchy.
The GLA is the subcompact, entry-level option, designed for city agility with seating for five and a sleek, car-like feel. Power typically starts with a 221-hp turbo four-cylinder engine. Stepping up is the GLB, a compact SUV with a boxier, more rugged look that gives it greater utility, including an available third row for up to seven passengers. It shares the GLA’s standard engine but offers slightly more cargo space.
Moving into the mid-size segment is the highly competitive GLE. This is a significant jump in luxury, power, and capability, offering a wider range of engines (including an available mild-hybrid inline-six and V8 options) and more spacious seating for five, with an optional third row. The GLE also features higher towing capacities.
At the top of the range is the GLS, Mercedes’ flagship full-size SUV. Often called the “S-Class of SUVs,” it comes standard with three rows of seating and focuses on ultimate luxury, advanced technology, and powerful engines (including mild-hybrid systems). The GLS provides the largest interior and cargo volume, catering to buyers who prioritize maximum space and premium amenities.
