A new Mercedes-Benz concept car, the CONCEPT AMG® GT XX, recently completed a marathon run that rewrote the record books for electric vehicle endurance. On the legendary high-speed test track in Nardò, Italy, this technological pioneer set a remarkable 25 records. Notably, it obliterated the 24-hour EV distance record by traveling an incredible 5,479 km (3,404 mi), which is over 1,500 km (932 mi) farther than the previous benchmark. 

Beyond this impressive single feat, the CONCEPT AMG® GT XX undertook a challenge inspired by Jules Verne’s classic tale: to drive “around the world in eight days.” Ultimately, it completed the 40,075 km (24,901 mi) journey—the equivalent of the Earth’s circumference—in just 7 days, 13 hours, 24 minutes, and 7 seconds, beating its own target. To illustrate the magnitude of this accomplishment, consider these points: 

• The vehicle averaged over 5,300 km (3,293 mi) per day. 

• It maintained a constant speed of 300 km/h (186 mph) for most of the run. 

• Two vehicles ran simultaneously for the entire duration, and they crossed the finish line a mere 25 km (15.5 mi) apart. 

The Technology That Made It Happen 

This incredible performance is not magic; instead, it is a testament to cutting-edge Mercedes technology. The CONCEPT AMG® GT XX showcases the future-proof capabilities of the upcoming high-performance AMG.EA architecture. The vehicle features three innovative axial flux motors that are lighter, more compact, and yet significantly more powerful than conventional electric motors. The power density of these motors is roughly three times higher, which means they produce top-level driving performance with incredible consistency. 

In addition, a revolutionary high-performance battery powers the vehicle. This battery is directly cooled by a non-conductive oil, which ensures an optimal temperature for each of its 3,000+ cells. Consequently, this advanced thermal management enables a continuous power output and also facilitates ultra-fast charging. The vehicle averaged an astonishing 850 kW of charging power, so it could recover enough energy for a range of about 400 km in only five minutes. This production-ready technology promises to transform the electric vehicle landscape.
