Mercedes-Maybach: When Luxury Gets Even More Luxurious

What is a Mercedes-Maybach?

Here at Mercedes-Benz of Scottsdale, AZ, we sell some of the most luxurious vehicles you can get. But what happens you take a luxury vehicle and make it even more luxurious? The result is the Mercedes-Maybach. But what exactly is a Mercedes-Maybach vehicle? Where do they come from? When were they founded? Did they always make luxury vehicles? Let’s take a look.

What is Mercedes-Maybach?

The brand as we know it today started in 2015. At the time of writing, the collaboration produces critically acclaimed, ultra-luxury versions of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Sedan and the Mercedes-Benz GLS SUV. An all-electric concept car has been introduced too, dubbed the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6. The company’s models compete at the highest tier of luxury vehicles, duking it out with brands like Bentley and Rolls-Royce. As a result, the Mercedes-Maybach models are usually the most expensive in the entire Mercedes line-up, excluding a few of the Mercedes-AMG supercar models.

History of Maybach

Maybach was founded back in 1909 by Wilhelm Maybach, an experienced technical director from DMG. The original Maybach factory produced engines for things like zeppelins, rail cars, and aircraft. By 1921, though, Maybach as a company had switched gears to produce a number of limited-availability, high-end luxury vehicles, such as the W 3 and SW 42 models. Automotive production ceased in 1940, restarting in the 1960s. All models produced thereafter were branded and badged as Mercedes-Benz vehicles.

It wouldn’t be until 1997 that Maybach came back under its own name, producing two models: the Maybach 57 and the Maybach 62. However, due in large part to the 2007-2008 global financial crisis, Maybach sales were poor. The brand ceased production of all but limousine models in 2012, with limo production ending in 2013.
