The advantage here is that you can still get the feel and thrill of driving a powerful gas-engine car. Additionally, by adding in an electric motor to act in unison with the gas engine, you can not only see efficiency gains, but performance gains as well with a small boost in horsepower and a significant boost in torque. Hybrid systems tend to favor torque because that’s what electric motors are good at producing.

Are there any disadvantages to a mild-hybrid system?

This is the wonderful thing about most mild-hybrid systems is that outside of a little added complexity and a minor amount of weight, there are not any disadvantages. It has taken a while for technology to get to a spot that allows mild-hybrid systems to work, but now that they are here, more and more brands are relying on them, and a select few brands like Mercedes-Benz are betting big on them.

In fact, when used as an integrated starter generator, they can save some weight and eliminate some components. Many new Mercedes-Benz models currently use integrated starter generators, and the technology is set to permeate even more Mercedes-Benz engines with the 2022 model year.
