How Does a Used Car Become a Certified Pre-Owned Mercedes Benz?

Mercedes-Benz Certified Pre-Owned Qualifications

Have you ever wondered what the difference is between a used car and a certified pre-owned car? Doesn’t it seem like a gimmick to get you to spend more money for the same product? Fortunately, this is a common misconception, especially when it comes to Mercedes-Benz vehicles. There are many inspections and tests that make up the Mercedes-Benz certified pre-owned qualifications.

Mercedes-Benz CPO Criteria

In order to be recognized as a certified pre-owned Mercedes-Benz, all models are subjected to a rigorous testing process that consists of more than 150 checkpoints. These checks are done by a Mercedes-Benz inspection expert, provided by Mercedes-Benz, and each checkpoint is put into one of six categories.

First, a history report is inspected to learn as much about the vehicle as possible. This includes maintenance verification, diagnostic trouble code checks, and assembly of owner’s manuals and spare keys.

CPO Engine Inspection

Next comes the engine. It is the most important part of the car, making this one of the most important areas of inspection. All fluids are checked for verification of regular service, perfect performance, and any leaks or damaged areas associated with oils and other fluids under the hood. After this, emission tests, ignition checks, compression tests, and many other electrical diagnostics are completed to make sure there are no hidden problems with the car. To be more specific, about 40 other electrical diagnostics have to pass out-of-the-box regulations for the car to get certified.

Body and Chassis Tests

As time wears down on the body, unseen problems can cause more than just headaches. To remove the risk of this, over 25 inspection points are done on the body to check for structure damage, balancing, safety mechanics, and all body instruments from front to back of the car. If everything up to this point is up to speed, road tests are completed to make sure everything is in perfect working order. If the car checks out mechanically, the last inspection is for Appearance. Mercedes-Benz Certified Pre-Owned regulations indicate that the car must be completely absent of dings, dents, scratches, and any other annoying aesthetic problems.
