Mercedes-Benz Solid-State Battery Technology Delivers Massive Range
At Mercedes-Benz of Scottsdale, we are continually in awe of the innovative advancements our brand brings to the automotive world. For instance, consider this: a single, uninterrupted journey across three European countries without a single stop to recharge. This is precisely what a lightly modified Mercedes-Benz EQS test vehicle recently accomplished, traveling from Stuttgart, Germany, to Malmö, Sweden—a remarkable distance of 749 miles. It further arrived with an impressive 85 miles of range remaining. This achievement is not merely a record; moreover, it’s a profound demonstration of the potential of future electric mobility, all thanks to a groundbreaking technology at the heart of the vehicle.
The EQS that completed this monumental journey was equipped with a lithium-metal Mercedes-Benz solid-state battery. In fact, this real-world test drive was part of a comprehensive validation program for this promising technology. A solid-state battery replaces the liquid or gel electrolyte found in conventional lithium-ion batteries with a solid one. As a result, this switch provides numerous advantages:
This advanced technology is a collaborative effort. The solid-state battery system was developed in close collaboration with Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains (HPP), the Formula 1 technology hub for Mercedes-Benz. Furthermore, the lithium-metal cells themselves come from U.S.-based manufacturer Factorial Energy, utilizing their innovative FEST® technology.
The route from Stuttgart to Malmö followed major European highways, consequently providing a true-to-life test of the vehicle’s capabilities. For this trip, the journey was meticulously planned using Electric Intelligence, which considers factors like topography, traffic, and ambient temperature to optimize the route for maximum efficiency.
Markus Schäfer, a Member of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG, remarks on the significance of the achievement: “The Mercedes-Benz solid-state battery is a true gamechanger for electric mobility.” Therefore, this demonstration proves that the technology performs not just in the lab but also on the open road. Mercedes-Benz’s ambition is to bring such innovations to series production by the end of the decade, thus offering customers an entirely new level of range and comfort.

This impressive drive is just one part of a much larger initiative. Mercedes-Benz continues to perform real-world testing to accelerate the path to series production. The EQS’s journey also surpassed the previous record set by the Vision EQXX, a testament to the continuous progress being made. By combining Formula 1-derived engineering expertise with cutting-edge battery innovation, this new Mercedes EQS technology represents a giant leap forward. Ultimately, for those seeking the pinnacle of luxury and electric performance, a long-range Mercedes-Benz EV is on the horizon, promising to redefine expectations for what an electric vehicle can achieve.
