The Coupe: What It Is and How It Differs from a Sedan
“Coupes have two doors and sedan have four doors.” For many people, this is the defining difference between a coupe and a sedan. However, this difference does not hold true. Take the 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLC 250 Coupe, for instance. It has four doors. The 2021 CLA Coupe and the 2021 CLS Coupe both also have four doors. What’s going on? Let us here at Mercedes-Benz of Scottsdale, AZ, help you out.
What is a coupe when talking about cars and how is it different from other vehicle types like a sedan or roadster? Let’s take a look.
What is a Coupe?
Coupe (or Coupé in the original French) did originally mean a two-seater horse-drawn carriage. As the automobile came into existence the term was adopted for two-seater cars. Nowadays, the word coupe generally means that a vehicle has a sportier powertrain compared to its sedan variant, as well as a few physical characteristics that sedans don’t, the most common of which is a sloped rear roof.
