Mercedes-Benz Engine Cylinder Management Saves On Gas

What Is Mercedes-Benz CAMTRONIC® Valve Lift Adjustment?

Mercedes-Benz vehicles are complicated in all the best ways. Every time a new Mercedes-Benz vehicle is introduced, it comes with a new dialect that must be learned to truly appreciate what we are seeing. For the 2018 Mercedes-AMG E63 S Sedan, this means figuring out what Mercedes-Benz CAMTRONIC® valve lift adjustment means.

What Does It Do?

Big engines are fun. They are loud, powerful, and extremely responsive. One thing they are not known for, however, is their efficiency. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could have big engines that only use the power when you need it? This is what CAMTRONIC® does.

Comfort Transmission Mode

When you select the comfort driving mode in the Mercedes-AMG E63 S, it closes the intake and exhaust valves to cylinders two, three, five, and eight. With the valves closed, spark plugs deactivated, and the fuel supply shut off, the engine operates like a normal, economical, 4-cylinder engine. Comfort transmission mode then keeps the engine speed between 1,000 and 3,250 RPM to further increase efficiency.

AMG® Cylinder Management

Mercedes-Benz CAMTRONIC® is part of the AMG® cylinder management system. By shutting off four of the cylinders, it also makes the remaining four more efficient by themselves while also saving life on the valves, fuel supply, and ignition systems of the ones that are shut off.
