“Oh, this old thing?” The AMG GT R Gets a New Grille!

2018 Mercedes-AMG GT R Panamericana Grille

The new Mercedes-AMG GT R is everything we could ever ask for from Mercedes-Benz. From the Green Hell Magno paint to the adaptive aerodynamics and Venturi-effect cooling systems, basically the only thing separating the GT R from an actual race car are the three extra seats surrounding the driver. All the speed and vomiting is obviously the main attraction here, but one of the coolest things about the new GT R is the resurrection of the panamericana grille that was made famous by the Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing Roadster!

The Gullwing is one of the most iconic sports cars in history. It was years ahead of it’s time in terms of power and weight distrubution, making it an easy and fun car to drive for even the most amateur of drivers. Even today, when you get behind the wheel of a 300SL, it doesn’t feel like it is 70 years old. In fact, the GT R proves that the grille, at least, is timeless.

The GT R is considered to be a descendent of the 300SL, but especially before the panamericana grille and the loss of the gullwing doors on the SLS, this is nearly impossible to deduce. Still, we think the GT R is going to be one of those cars that we look back on in 70 years and reminisce about how far ahead of its time it really was.
