What is Mercedes-Benz DIRECT SELECT?

If you have recently purchased a new Mercedes-Benz CLA or a even a used Mercedes-Benz E-Class, you may have noticed that the lever that normally controls windshield wipers now has a P, R, N, and D on it. You may have also noticed that the windshield wipers are automatic and therefore you don’t need to turn them on or off. What you are looking at is the DIRECT SELECT control lever. DIRECT SELECT is a feature that Mercedes-Benz includes in modern cars such as the 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLA. It is a means of more-easily switching gears from drive, reverse, neutral, and park. But Instead of being mechanically connected to the transmission via a shift lever on the center console, the lever simply sends an electronic signal to switch between gears.

DIRECT SELECT Benefits

DIRECT SELECT makes life more convenient for drivers, but the electronic nature of DIRECT SELECT also makes for faster and more precise shifting. This saves wear and tear on your transmission and will also save on frustration when parallel parking.

How to Use DIRECT SELECT

Mercedes-Benz wouldn’t put it in a vehicle if it wasn’t easier than traditional shifting, right? To switch between gears, all you have to do is press in(towards the driver’s side of car) to find park, push up for reverse and down for drive. If you need to be in neutral, simply press park twice.

Mercedes-Benz direct select is a smart technology that knows what it’s doing. It will only let you shift between gears if you are traveling at a speed less than 5 miles per hour. If you accidentally hit the lever while on the highway, don’t worry. Your car will simply ignore it.
