The Mercedes-Benz S-Class has been leading the army of Mercedes-Benz vehicles for many decades. Today, it represents intelligence, luxury, performance, and awareness all in one streamlined package with the plug-in hybrid S550e. It offers things like hybrid driving modes that you won’t find in other hybrid cars. For 2017, the S550e is the flagship Mercedes-Benz sedan to get and we will tell you why.

Traditionally, hybrid cars are known for efficiency alone. Comfort and luxury features are pushed to the side to make room for affordability and fuel economy, but that isn’t the case with the S550e. In fact, the S550e is far superior to the regular S550 for a number of reasons.

Power

By use of a 3.0L biturbo V6 and a 132kW electric motor, the S550e puts out 436 horsepower, which is just 13 horses shy of the S550, which uses a 4.6L V8.

Efficiency

The S550e is capable of 54 miles per gallon in the city and up to 63 miles per gallon on the highway. This is an incredible achievement for a two-ton vehicle than can jump from zero to 60 in just 5.2 seconds.

Operating Modes

The S550e can be put into one of four operating modes.

HYBRID

In HYBRID mode, the S550e operates the way Mercedes-Benz intended it to, using both the engine and the electric motor at the same time.

E-MODE

E-MODE turns off the combustion engine and allows the S550e to travel up to 12 miles on battery alone.

E-SAVE

E-SAVE still uses the engine and the electric motor together, but puts a priority on keeping the battery at a full charge.

CHARGE

CHARGE mode turns off the electric motor in order for the S550e to run on the combustion engine alone. We are not sure why you might want to do this but we appreciate having the option. If you have any questions about the 2017 Mercedes-Benz S550e hybrid driving modes, leave a comment below!
